Can scientists develop a new antivenom that works against cobra venom from different geographical regions of India?
In a major scientific breakthrough, researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) have developed an experimental recombinant, nanobody-based antivenom that offers broad protection against venom from multiple cobra and king cobra species found in India.
The research, published in Science Translational Medicine on 9 September 2026, could pave the way for more effective next-generation snakebite treatments.
Key Highlights of the Research:
Institutions: Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
Research: Development of a recombinant nanobody-based antivenom.
Technology: A cocktail of five engineered nanobodies.
Protection: Demonstrated protection against venom from spectacled cobras, monocled cobras and king cobras found in different Indian regions.
Experimental Results: The antivenom prevented deaths in mice exposed to these venoms.
Objective: Overcome the limitations of conventional antivenoms, including their variable effectiveness against geographically different snake venoms.
